Tigers Win, 6-3, Over Grossmont to Improve to 4-0

RIVERSIDE -- Winning its fourth match in as many starts, the Riverside City College (RCC) Tigers men's tennis squad dispatched the Grossmont College Griffins, 6-3, in a non-conference match Thursday afternoon (February 6) at RCC's Fran Bushman Courts.

Riverside (4-0) won singles matches Nos. 2, 4, 5 and 6 over Grossmont (0-1).

The Tigers will now prepare for a non-conference away match on Tuesday, Feb. 11, against the Glendale College Vaqueros of the Western State Conference. Match time is 2 p.m. RCC's next home match will be on Thursday, Feb. 13, when both the men's and women's teams host the Palomar College Comets starting at 2 p.m.

According to RCC head coach Jim Elton:

Freshman Kane Wijngaarden (Sandpoint, ID / Sandpoint HS) picked up his first victory and got the Tigers started with his "Eco Boost" performace (most efficient use of energy) taking down his opponent 6-0, 6-1 in the No. 5 singles spot.

Freshman Conner Stephenson (Riverside / River Springs HS) kept it going, putting the Tigers up, 2-0, with a dominating performance at the No. 4 singles spot, 6-1, 6-0.

Sophomore Danny Garcia (Riverside / Arlington HS) returned to the No. 2 singles position and put the Tigers up, 3-0, winning 6-1, 6-2.

Freshman Allen Tieul (Riverside / King HS) got his first victory for the Tigers with a strong win at No. 6 singles, 6-3, 6-1.

With losses at #1 and #3 singles the Tigers headed to doubles needing one win to seal the victory.  The #3 doubles team of David Stanko (Moreno Valley / Canyon Springs HS) and Patrick Stetco (Redlands / Redlands HS) brought home the win with a 8-3 victory.
