In Fourth CCCAA Appearance, Tigers Finish Fourth at CCCAA Championships

ARROYO GRANDE -- Picking the worst time to shoot its worst rounds of the season, the Riverside City College (RCC) Tigers men's golf team finished fourth at the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) Championships last Monday (May 15) at Cypress Ridge Golf Course.

Riverside City shot 390 in the morning round and 404 in the afternoon session for a team total of 794 strokes, 33 shots behind first-place College of the Canyons (379+382=761). It was the eighth state title for the Cougars. Cypress was second (385+400=785) and Ventura was third (399+390=789).

Rounding out the final eight in the state were Folsom Lake (397+402=799), Chabot (411+407=818), defending CCCAA champion Reedley (408+414=822) and Modesto (410+414=824).

Dylan Hall of Cypress took medalist honors (73+74=147).

Riverside sophomore Everett Najera (Corona - Corona HS '15) narrowly missed gaining all-state status (top six) as he shot a 152 (74+78).

Rounding out the rest of the RCC individual scores were sophomore Robby Melton (Riverside - Citrus Hill HS '15), who shot 156 (78+78), followed freshman Michael Herrera (Moreno Valley - Valley View HS '16), who shot 158 (79+79), sophomore Nick Bridge (Riverside - Norte Vista HS '15), who shot 162 (77+85), sophomore Jordan Sams (Lake Arrowhead - Rim of the World HS '10), who shot 161 (82+85) and freshman Brian Nielsen (Riverside - Poly HS), who shot 169 (85+84).

"I'm extremely proud of how they have competed this year," said ninth-year RCC head coach Steve Sigloch, in reference to the RCC sextet.

RCC won its only CCCAA men's golf championship in 2014 on its home course, Victoria Club. The Tigers were making their fourth appearance at the CCCAA Championships (also in 2010, 2014, 2015).
