Tigers Win First Place at CCCAA South Regional Championships; Advance to CCCAA Championships May 15

OCEANSIDE -- Winning both the morning and afternoon rounds of the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) South Regional Championships last Monday (May 8) at El Camino Country Club, the Riverside City College (RCC) Tigers men's golf team will advance to the CCCAA Championships.

The CCCAA Championships will be held at Cypress Ridge Golf Course in Arroyo Grande on Monday, May 15. Tee time is 7 a.m.

Riverside shot a combined team score of 750 to win by eight strokes over fellow Orange Empire Conference (OEC) member Cypress (758 strokes). Also advancing to next Monday's CCCAA Championships are College of the Canyons (765) and Ventura (774).

A week ago (May 1), RCC shot collective team scores of 362 (morning, North Course, par 72) and 371 (afternoon, South Course, par 74) to win the OEC Championship at Los Serranos Country Club in Chino Hills. It was the Tigers' second OEC Championship in the last three seasons (also in 2015).

The double OEC win improved RCC's won-lost record in the OEC standings to 43-7.

Riverside sophomore Everett Najera (Corona - Corona HS '15) -- who is pictured -- fired a 144 (72+72) to earn medalist honors.

Rounding out the rest of the RCC individual scores were sophomore Robby Melton (Riverside - Citrus Hill HS '15), who shot 150 (76+74). Sophomore Nick Bridge (Riverside - Norte Vista HS '15) (73+79) and freshman Michael Herrera (Moreno Valley - Valley View HS '16) (79+73) each shot 152. Freshman Brian Nielsen (Riverside - Poly HS) shot 155 (80+75) and sophomore Jordan Sams (Lake Arrowhead / Rim of the World HS '10) shot 158 (82+76).

"I'm extremely proud of how they have competed this year, especially the last two tournaments," said ninth-year RCC head coach Steve Sigloch, in reference to the RCC sextet. "We are looking forward to playing for a state championship."

Missing the cut for the CCCAA Championships were fifth-place Orange Coast (776), followed by College of the Desert (785), Mt. San Jacinto (788), Santa Barbara City (789) and Citrus (799).

After Najera, rounding out the next five individual scores were Josh McCollum of Orange Coast, Joey Herrera of Ventura and Dylan Hall of Cypress who each finished four strokes behind Najera with scores of 148. Kieran Blundell and Mitch Cannon each carded a 149. Finishing in the top six, Najera and the aforementioned five other non-RCC golfers were named to the All-Southern California team.

RCC won its only CCCAA men's golf championship in 2014 on its home course, Victoria Club. The Tigers will be making their fourth appearance at the CCCAA Championships (also in 2010, 2014, 2015).
