Sams & Melton Each Shoot 70, Tigers Finish Second in Annual Tee-off Classic Last Wednesday

CHINO HILLS -- Having two of four players shoot 70 or better, the Riverside City College (RCC) Tigers men's golf team lifted the lid on its 2017 campaign with a second-place finish at the annual Orange Empire Conference (OEC) - hosted Tee-off Classic last Wednesday (Feb. 1) at Los Serranos Golf Club's North Course (par 72).

Riverside City carded a collective 366, two shots behind first-place Orange Coast College (OCC), which shot 364. RCC sophomores Jordan Sams (Lake Arrowhead / Rim of the World HS '10) -- who is pictured -- and Robby Melton (Riverside - Citrus Hill HS '15) each shot a 70, as did OCC freshman Tetsu Kase (JAPAN).

Santa Barbara City College (SBCC) sophomore Niels Anderson (San Marcos HS) gained medalist honors with a six-under-par 66.

RCC sophomore Everett Najera (Corona - Corona HS '15) shot a 73, followed by freshman Brian Nielsen (Riverside - Poly HS) at 76, sophomore Nick Bridge (Riverside - Norte Vista HS '15) at 77, and freshman Michael Herrera (Moreno Valley - Valley View HS '16) at 83.

Saddleback College (375) was third, followed by Santa Barbara City (376) and Cypress (382) to round out the top five teams. Palomar was sixth (), followed by College of the Desert (), Mt. San Jacinto (), Mt. San Antonio () and Citrus ().

Irvine Valley (405), Cuyamaca (406) and Victor Valley (517) concluded the team scoring.

Riverside will be idle until Monday, Feb. 13, when it participates in the "Pnoo-monia" Invitational at Spring Valley Lake Country Club in Victorville. Tee time is 10 a.m.
