Tiger Golfers Top 12 Other Teams in Season Opener

RIVERSIDE – Posting a collective score of one-over-par, the host Riverside City College (RCC) Tigers men's golf team opened its season on a winning note as it finished ahead of twelve other teams at the annual Riverside Invitational last Monday afternoon (Jan. 27) at Victoria Country Club.

With the overall win, the match also included the five other Orange Empire Conference (OEC) teams, and gave RCC a 5-0 conference record. Riverside shot 361, followed by College of the Desert (367), OEC-rival Santiago Canyon (368), defending state champion College of the Canyons (377) and OEC-rival Orange Coast (379). The other OEC rivals were Cypress (seventh, 390), Saddleback (eighth, 394) and Irvine Valley (twelfth, 420).  

For Riverside, sophomore Clay Hjulberg (Riverside / Poly HS) led with a three-under-par 69 with three birdies, followed by freshman Chad Hambright (Lake Elsinore / Temescal Canyon HS) with a two-under-par 70 with 4 birdies.  Other top scorers for RCC were freshman Wes Hatton (Norco / Norco HS) with an even-par 72 with two birdies and an eagle, and freshman Eric Cross (Riverside / Poly HS) with a one-over-par 73 with five birdies.

Riverside will return to action on Monday, Feb. 3, when it participates in the annual "Pnoomonia" Invitational, hosted Victor Valley College at Spring Valley Lake CC in Victorville in a 10 a.m. tee-off.
