Riverside Routs San Diego Miramar, 73-48, in Tigers' Home Opener
RIVERSIDE -- Leading from the first field goal, the Riverside City College (RCC) Tigers men's basketball team didn't disappoint in its home opener as it took a 73-48 nonconference win over the visiting San Diego Miramar College (SDMC) Jets Wednesday evening (Nov. 18) at legendary Arthur N. Wheelock Gymnasium on the RCC campus.
Riverside (5-2 overall) snapped a two-game losing skein from last weekend's Alvin Hunter Tournament at San Bernardino Valley College with the win.
The Tigers opened the scoring when sophomore forward Sage Woodruff (Los Angeles / Fairfax HS '14) drained a three-pointer at the 19:32 mark for a 3-0 lead. Woodruff went on to register eight points, a co-game-high eight rebounds and three blocked shots.
Freshman guard Tramel Wilson (Hawthorne / Washington Prep. '15) next pumped in a three-point field goal to make the score 6-2 and the Tigers were never headed. Wilson finished with a game-high 16 points.
All told, Riverside made 15 of 20 field goal attempts (75%) in the first half en route to a 42-23 halftime lead.
In the second half, RCC built its biggest leads of 27 points at 70-43 (at 3:54) and 73-46 (at 1:03).
RCC freshman guard Andy Cleaves II (Riverside / John W. North HS '14) added 11 points and also had a co-game-high eight rebounds.
For S.D. Miramar (2-3 overall), freshman guard Javan Perry (Little Rock, AR / Little Rock Hall HS) led the Jets with 13 points. Freshman guard Braxton Latt (Portland, OR / Benson Poly HS) was next with eight points and a team-high seven rebounds for the Jets.
RCC will be idle for the next two weeks before facing College of the Canyons on Thursday, Dec. 3, in the opening round of a tournament at Mt. San Jacinto College.
