42nd Annual Riverside Holiday Basketball Tournament, Day 4 (of 5), Riverside City College
RIVERSIDE – The hustling Chaffey College Panthers led from start to finish and defeated the host Riverside City College (RCC) Tigers men's basketball team, 89-60, to cap the fourth day of action in the 42nd annual Riverside Holiday Basketball Tournament Friday evening (Dec. 13) at Wheelock Gymnasium.
Chaffey (12-2) led, 9-1, and 27-18, before settling for a 43-31 halftime lead. Thirteen Panthers saw action as freshman guard Andre Wilson (Valley View HS) came off the bench and poured in a game-high 20 points.
For Riverside City (4-7), freshman guards Robert James (Palm Springs HS) and Kendall Brown (Roosevelt HS) each tossed in 12 points for the Tigers.
The upstart East Los Angeles College Huskies (11-2) also punched a ticket for Saturday's championship final with an 82-76 double-overtime win over the San Bernardino College Wolverines (12-3). Freshman guard Marcus Romain (Progressive Christian HS), who came off the bench and finished with a game-high 24 points, drained five of six free throws in the final 56 seconds to keep SBVC at bay.
SBVC sophomore guard Gerry Blakes (Morningside HS), already committed to Arizona State, played only six minutes in the first half, but stepped up with a team-high-tying 18 points, including five three-pointers. Sophomore guard Tymarieh Dixon (Chino / Don Antonio Lugo HS) also had 18 for SBVC.
On Saturday, Dec. 14, SBVC will face host Riverside at 5 p.m. in the third-place game.
The Saddleback College Gauchos (11-1) advanced to Saturday's fifth-place game (3 p.m.) with a 69-57 win over L.A. Pierce (5-10). Sophomore forward Eric Thompson (Clawson, MI HS) had a team-high 15 rebounds and a game-high 18 rebounds for Saddleback, the No. 1-ranked team in the state. Sophomore wing Terrell Funches (Chatsworth HS) had a game-high 21 points for the Brahmas.
Saddleback's opponent on Saturday will be the L.A. Trade Technical College Beavers (8-3), a 77-67 winner over the Palomar College Comets (4-8). Freshman forward Andre Harris had a co-game-high 23 points on nine-of-11 shooting for the Beavers, while sophomore forward Kyle Reid added 18 points and a game-high 16 rebounds. Freshman forward Jeremy Franklin (Escondido HS) had a co-game-high 23 points for Palomar.
The El Camino College-Compton Center Tartars (4-6) advanced to Saturday's consolation championship (ninth-place) game at 1 p.m. with an 89-81 overtime win over the Citrus College Owls (5-4). Sophomore guard Ray Foote (Crenshaw HS) pumped in a game-high 27 points to lead the Tartars.
The Tartars' opponent on Saturday will be the highly regarded Antelope Valley College (AVC) Maruaders (10-3) – ranked No. 6 in the state – had trouble with the College of the Sequoias (COS) Giants (3-9), but hung on for a 66-62 overtime win. AVC sophomore guard Lucciano Games (Quartz Hill HS) pumped in 17 points – all in the second half – including five three-pointers. COS forward Brantley Bynum poured in a game-high 25 points.
