42nd Annual Riverside Holiday Basketball Tournament, Day 1 (of 5)
RIVERSIDE – The host Riverside City College (RCC) Tigers men's basketball team led from start to finish and cruised to an 87-63 home win over the College of the Desert Roadrunners to conclude the first day of action in the 42nd annual Riverside Holiday Basketball Tournament Tuesday evening (Dec. 10) at Wheelock Gymnasium.
Riverside City (3-6) opened with leads of 6-0, 14-4, and 22-5, en route to a 45-24 halftime lead.
Four Tigers scored in double figures, led by freshman guard Kendall Brown (Corona / Roosevelt HS) with a co-game-high 16 points. Freshman forward Chris Cook (Las Vegas, NV / Legacy HS) was next with 15 markers. Sophomore forward D.J. Muepo (Rancho Cucamonga / Los Angeles – Dorsey HS) added 12 points and sophomore forward Anthony Rounds (Perris / Citrus Hill HS) chipped in with ten. Muepo added a game-high nine rebounds.
For College of the Desert (2-10), the Roadrunners were led by sophomore guard Johnny Flores (Indio HS) with 16 points, thanks to five three-point field goals. Sophomore guard Mike Karimu (Rancho Cucamonga HS) added 11 points.
For Palomar, Jeremy Franklin poured in 22 points to pace the Comets to a 79-72 win over ECC-Compton. Ray Foote had 23 points for the Tartars, which led 41-39 at halftime.Julian Njchols and Roderick Evans-Taylor each had 14 points to help Chaffey to a 72-61 win over Citrus. Adom Jacko added 12 points and 15 rebounds for the Panthers which defeated Citrus, 78-48, on December 10. Chris Reyes added a team-high 19 points and a game-high 17 rebounds for the Owls.Andre Harris pumped in a game-high 25 points, and Kyle Reid added ten points and a game-high 17 rebounds in L.A. Trade Tech's 87-70 win over Fullerton. JOel Brokenbrough led the Hornets with 23 points.
All eight teams from Tuesday will next play on Thursday, Dec. 12. At 12 p.m., the Fullerton College Hornets will "host" the Citrus College Owls, followed by ECC-Compton Tartars meeting COD at 4 p.m. as both of those games will be played in the Huntley Gymnasium. At 5 p.m., L.A. Trade Technical will "host" the Chaffey College Panthers before RCC hosts the Palomar College Comets at 7 p.m. Both of the previous two games will be played in Wheelock Gymnasium.
On Wednesday, Dec. 11, day two of the tournament will be contested with all four games at Wheelock Gym. At 1 p.m., the Saddleback College Gauchos (9-0) will take on the Antelope Valley College Marauders (8-2). At 3 p.m., the San Bernardino Valley College Wolverines (10-2) greet Santa Rosa Junior College (3-4). At 5 p.m., the Mt. San Jacinto College Eagles (6-1) meet the East Los Angeles College Huskies (8-2), and at 7 p.m., the College of the Sequoias Giants (2-7) will face the Los Angeles Pierce College Brahmas (4-8).
