Football Receives Top Ranking after Big Week Two Triumph

The Tigers have had a continuous presence in the JC Athletic Bureau Poll of California Community College Football Coaches for the past 10 years. Not only have they been present in the rankings, but they have held a top-15 spot the majority of the time. For the second-consecutive season, the Riverside City College football team has earned the number one ranking in the state following a strong week two victory.

Riverside elevates to the top spot after being ranked third overall the past two weeks. They earned the highest ranking after defeating Fullerton, 16-9, on Saturday afternoon for the first time since 2014. Despite a poor offensive showing, the Tigers defense and special teams rose to the occasion. They halted the offense to a mere seven points, blocked two field goals and recorded a safety, marking the first time since 2004 that Fullerton has been halted to under eight points. Furthermore, it was the first time Fullerton has been held scoreless entering into the half since 2015.

A massive shake up in the top five occurred after defending state champion Laney College lost its second-consecutive contest, while reigning Southern California Champion and state runner up Ventura College lost to fellow SCFA National Southern Conference member Saddleback. No. 1 Riverside and No. 4 Saddleback are set to meet in early November for the conference finale and potential conference title.

Riverside and Saddleback are two of the top-five teams and the only members of the Southern region. No. 2 Butte, No. 3 San Mateo and No. 5 American River compete the top five.

Riverside will take on three more top-25 teams in No. 13 San Diego Mesa, No. T19 San Bernardino Valley and No. 21 Southwestern. SBVC and RCC will face off this weekend at home.
