No. 2 Riverside Owns Chaffey in 56-7 Tromping

The No. 2 Riverside City College football squad is off to another amazing start as seen by its undefeated record through five weeks of action. Numerous players have strung together some impressive showings that has culminated into the early-season success that Riverside is currently experiencing. The Tigers put their unbeaten record to the test once again this evening by facing off against the Chaffey College Panthers on home turf in the Southern California Football Association (SCFA) Central Division opener. Riverside lit up the scoreboard by dominating the Panthers by the final count of 56-7.

The Tigers did not find the end zone on their opening drive, but that did not halt them from putting up 21 points in the first frame alone. It very quickly became the Vic Viramontes (Norco, CA) show.

The sophomore quarterback ignited the offensive engine by taking off for a 15-yard scurry to the end zone to put them up by a score. He followed by breaking the pylons with an 11 yard run with just under three minutes remaining to put them up 14-0 after two successful point after attempts by freshman kicker John Garibay (Rubidoux, CA).

After hitting the ground game with full force, Viramontes dropped back in the pocket and tossed the pigskin to freshman wide receiver Tanarious Achan (Lafayette, LA) for a 20-yard touchdown pass leading to a 21-0 advantage with time expiring in the first quarter.

The Tigers mirrored their opening frame by throwing up 21 more points in the second quarter to prove their offensive prowess.

After hauling in a touchdown grab in the first quarter, Achan got involved in the running game and took a 26 yard carry to the end zone. Achan displayed some pristine vision by receiving the handoff in motion to the right side, but reversing field and broke numbers ankles and tackles on his trip for six.

After a brief hiatus from the end zone, Viramontes returned once again on the following drive by running right down the throat of the Chaffey defense and into the end zone for his third rushing touchdown of the game. The ground game continued to flourish while Achan took yet another carry to the house - this time the play going for a 10 yard rushing score en route to a 42-0 lead at halftime.

Sophomore quarterback Travis Jonsen (Anaheim, CA) was given the nod on the opening drive of the third quarter and took full advantage by capping off a five play, 91-yard drive with a 64-yard touchdown run up the near sideline.  Freshman running back Malik Walker (Corona, CA) capped off the scoring for Riverside with a three-yard touchdown run en route to a commanding 56-7 victory.

The Riverside defense was a multi-headed monster. They allowed just one touchdown and held the Chaffey offense to just 3.8 yards-per-play. Freshman safety Eric Wilson (Oceanside, CA) was in on the majority of the plays by recording eight tackles – two going for solo stops. Freshman linebacker Majalee Gay (Murrietta, CA) recorded eight tackles, while freshman defensive back Evan Gutierrez (Fontana, CA) backed him with seven tackles.

Viramontes led the Tigers to their sixth win of the season by going 9-for-12 with 129 yards and one touchdown through the air. He also carted the ball nine times for a total of 63 yards and a trio of touchdowns.

Jonsen performed well under center by completing two of four passes and rushing for 126 yards and one touchdown off seven carries.

Achan displayed versatility by carrying the ball three times for 56 yards and two touchdowns. He also hauled in three receptions for 102 yard and a touchdown. Sophomore wide receiver Derrick Williams (San Diego, CA) led all receivers with four grabs.

The Tigers (6-0, 1-0 SCFA-Central) are one of two undefeated teams in the state. They continue conference play next Saturday, October 21^st in a showdown against L.A. Harbor at 6 p.m. on the road.
