Baseball Drops Second Straight

It was a rough second showing for the Riverside City College baseball team as they hosted the Cuesta College Cougars in the second game of a three-game series. The Tigers only mustered three hits while allowing 12 runs on 17 hits leading to a 12-2 loss.

Freshman shortstop Robert Phelps, freshman catcher Dominic Dominguez and freshman center fielder Derek Hurtado were the lone players to barrel a base knock. Phelps hit came in the second inning on a single through the left side, while Hurtado drove in Dominguez on a bloop single to center field in the eighth inning. Dominguez had the only extra base hit with a double to left field.

Sophomore third baseman Beau Betten kept the Tigers in it early by laying out for a ground ball to his left side in the second inning. He was completely horizontal with the ground, popped to his feet and fired a strike to freshman first baseman Andrew Rodriguez for the out.

It was another abysmal outing for the pitching staff. Sophomore starter Hayden Coon (0-1) earned the nod and got through the first two frames scoreless. He went on to last just two more innings by giving up three runs on five hits while striking out three.

Sophomore reliver Christopher Fields tossed 1.1 innings and fanned three. His first came in the top of the eighth inning to work out of a bases juiced jam.

Riverside (0-2) will finish off the series against the Cougars tomorrow at 12 p.m. at home on the hunt for their first win of the season.
