Garrett Irvin Drafted by Boston Red Sox
Sophomore ace Garrett Irvin quickly went from "Mr. Reliable" to "Mr. Irrelevant" after the 2019 MLB First-Year Player's Draft. Do not be confused - by no means is Irvin irrelevant. It is simply the title awarded to the final pick of each year's draft.
Irvin was the final player selected in the draft by the Boston Red Sox in the 40th round. He was the 1,217 overall pick and the only Riverside City College baseball player selected from this season's roster.
Irvin is the second RCC ace to be selected in as many years after Daniel Martinez '18 was drafted by the Oakland Athletics last season.
Irvin was a dominant force on the bump after starting 15 games and producing a 10-2 record. He recorded a 2.25 ERA with 98 strikeouts while walking only 18 batters. He tossed one complete game shutout in the first game of the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) regional round against Cuesta College.
He landed in double digit strikeouts twice on the season highlighted by 11 punch outs in 12-1 victory over Cypress. He had at least five strikeouts in every start besides one.
Irvin, who was a Division II bounce back, was named the Orange Empire Conference (OEC) Pitcher of the Year and was recognized on the All-Southern California team.
Irvin has committed to play at the University of Arizona next season.
