Riverside Spots Ventura 7-0 Lead, Tigers Roar Back to 9-7 Win Thanks to 8-run Fifth

RIVERSIDE -- Spotting the visitors a 7-0 lead, the Riverside City College (RCC) Tigers baseball team roared back with an eight-run fifth inning after two were out and none on to post a 9-7 non-conference home win over the Ventura College Pirates Wednesday evening (Apr. 12) at Samuel C. Evans Park.
Riverside City (26-8 overall) parlayed five singles, two doubles and three walks to account for the eight-run fifth. Sophomore LF/RHP Ryan Mota (Fontana - Kaiser HS '14) singled and scored to start the rally and then singled to drive in the tying and go-ahead runs for RCC. Sophomore RF Dean Miller (Riverside - Ramona HS) had a two-run single to get RCC to within 7-6. Miller added a solo home run in the seventh inning -- his third circuit clout of the season -- to conclude the scoring.
Mota, who went three for five at the plate, came in to pitch the ninth and notched his third save.
For Ventura (18-15 overall), sophomore 3B Blake Chiaramonte (Moorpark) had singles in the first, third, fourth and seventh innings, before getting called out on strikes to end the game. He had four RBI and three runs scored.
RCC freshman LHP David Barela -- who is pictured -- received credit for the win (5-2). He pitched 3.0 innings, allowed one hit and struck out six, including the side in order in the seventh. VC's Dylan Francis was the loser (5-2).
