MIller's Game-winning RBI Single Lifts Tigers to 9-8, Ten-inning Win Over San Bernardino Valley Tuesday

RIVERSIDE -- Dean Miller lined a game-winning RBI single with one out in the bottom of the tenth inning and Eduardo Martinez raced home from second base with the winning run, eluding the catcher's tag in the process, and the Riverside City College (RCC) Tigers baseball team shaded the visiting San Bernardino Valley College (SBVC) Wolverines, 9-8, in a non-conference game at the Samuel C. Evans Sports Complex Tuesday (Jan. 31).

Riverside City (2-2 overall) pushed across three runs in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game at 8-8 after SBVC (0-3 overall) had broken a 5-5 tie with a three-run eighth inning.

In the bottom of the tenth, Martinez drew a one-out walk. Sophomore DH John Gonzalez (Corona - Corona HS '15) followed with a walk before Miller, a sophomore RF from Riverside (Ramona HS '15) drilled a 1-2 pitch into left field. The incoming throw was upline of home plate and appeared to be in time to nail Martinez, but, somehow, he eluded the tag and scored.

Miller went four for six for the Tigers and scored three runs in additional to his game-winning run batted in. RCC sophomore catcher Zach Grande (San Bernardino - Cajon HS '15) had a first-inning two-run single and a RBI groundout in the fifth.

Sophomore RHP Darin May (Moreno Valley - Valley View HS '14) pitched the ninth and tenth, allowed one hit and struck out four to notch his first win (1-0) of the season. SBVC RHP Adrian Rosell, who started at short stop, got the final two outs of the ninth, but couldn't get out of the tenth unscathed and was the losing pitcher (0-1).

RCC sophomore starting LHP Bayley Chesterton (Riverside - Martin Luther King HS '15) -- who is pictured -- went the first 4-2/3 innings for the Tigers.

There will be no rest for RCC as it treks to Palomar College on Wednesday, Feb. 1, for a 2 p.m. non-conference game. The Tigers' next home game will be on Thursday, Feb. 2, when they host the Grossmont College Griffins.
