Delgado & Darr Named First Team All-OEC, O'Brien & Weiss Named Second Team All-OEC
IRVINE -- Four players from the Riverside City College (RCC) Tigers baseball team received All-Orange Empire Conference (OEC) teams, including two on the first team at the annual meeting of the OEC coaches held at UC Irvine.
Earning All-OEC First Team honors from RCC were sophomore RHP Angel Delgado (Beaumont / Beaumont HS '13)and sophomore outfielder Michael Darr (Corona / Santiago HS '14)
Named to the All-OEC Second team were sophomore starting right-handed pitcher Andrew O'Brien (Corona / Corona HS) and sophomore infielder Brody Weiss, who was a first team honoree in 2015.
Delgado -- who is pictured -- was the Tigers' No. 1 starter and, in OEC action, compiled a 2-2 won-lost record in eight OEC appearances (seven starts). He had a team-high 48-1/3 innings pitched and a 2.98 earned run average (ERA) with 33 strikeouts and 17 walks in OEC action. Overall, Delgado is 7-3 with 79-2/3 innings pitched and a team-low 2.03 ERA as all 18 runs he allowed were earned.
Darr, in 21 OEC games, batted .333 (26 for 78) with seven doubles and one triple with five RBI and 11 runs scored. Overall, in 30 games, Darr batted .337.
O'Brien, in 12 OEC appearances (six OEC starts), was 3-4 with two saves and a 1.93 ERA in 46-2/3 innings with 25 strikeouts. Overall, O'Brien had a 2.14 ERA.
Weiss (Denver, CO / Regis Jesuit HS '13), in 21 OEC games, batted .346 (28 of 81) with seven doubles, one triple and three home runs. He drove in 13 runs and scored 13 runs. Overall, Weiss batted .293 in 37 games with 12 doubles, two triples and three home runs.
Riverside City (22-15 overall, 9-12 in OEC, fifth place) received the 18th and final berth in the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) Southern California Regional Playoffs. Riverside visited the No. 15-seeded Santa Barbara City College Vaqueros (19-18 overall) and came away with a 3-2 win last Tuesday (May 3) at Pershing Park.
This weekend (weather permitting), RCC will face the No. 1 seeded Saddleback College Gauchos in a best two-out-of-three series at Doug Fritz Field. The series continues Saturday, May 7, with at least one game and, if necessary, another game.
RCC won state championships in 2000 (39-12-1), 2001 (46-7), 2002 (45-8) and 2007 (37-18).
