Weiss Goes Five for Five & Scores Five Runs as Riverside Tops Fullerton, 11-6, Saturday

RIVERSIDE – Brody Weiss went five for five with five runs scored including three doubles and Zach Grande went two for three including his first home run of the season as the host Riverside City College (RCC) Tigers men's baseball team topped the Fullerton College (FC) Hornets, 11-6, in an Orange Empire Conference (OEC) game Saturday afternoon (Apr. 16) at Evans Sports Complex.

Weiss, a sophomore SS from Denver, CO (Regis Jesuit HS '13) and a son of former American League Rookie of the Year (1988) and current field manager of the Colorado Rockies Walt Weiss, doubled and scored in the second, singled (on a pop fly which fell untouched in the infield due to gusty winds) and scored in the fourth, doubled, stole third and scored on a sacrifice fly in the sixth, singled through the left side of the infield in the seventh and scored on a RBI single by Grande, and doubled into the left-field corner in the eighth, advanced to third on a strikeout/wild pitch, and scored on the ensuing catcher's throwing error.

Grande, a freshman catcher from San Bernardino / Cajon HS '15, homered to right field as the Tigers narrowed to gap to 5-3 at the time.

Sophomore LF Michael Darr (Corona / Santiago HS '14), a son of the late Mike Darr of the San Diego Padres, went three for four with one run scored and one RBI.  Sophomore DH Tommie Pincin (Upland / Upland HS '14) went two for four with three RBI for Riverside City (17-13 overall, 5-10 OEC).

All told, the teams combined for 17 runs and 30 hits.

RCC freshman reliever Christian Stiegele (Murrieta / Murrieta Mesa HS '15) pitched 3-1/3 innings of relief and allowed only one run (earned) on five hits and one walk with four strikeouts to gain credit for the win (3-0). Fullerton freshman LHP Gilbert Sanchez (Santa Fe Springs) pitched two-thirds of an inning and surrendered four runs (all earned) on four hits with no walks and one strikeout and sustained the loss (0-3).

FC sophomore RF Shane Carrier (Anaheim) went three for four, including a double for Fullerton (22-8 overall, 10-5 OEC).

Both teams return to action on Tuesday, Apr. 19, when Riverside City hosts Orange Coast and Fullerton hosts Irvine Valley for the first game of a three-game OEC series. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
