Darr Walks & Smith Scores Winning Run in Riverside's Eleven-inning, 2-1 Win Over Mt. San Antonio Tuesday

RIVERSIDE – Michael Darr drew a bases-loaded walk with no outs in the bottom of the eleventh inning to force home Sean Smith with the winning run as the host Riverside City College (RCC) Tigers men's baseball team edged the visiting Mt. San Antonio College (MSAC) Mounties, 2-1, in eleven innings Tuesday evening (Feb. 23) at the Evans Sports Complex.

Darr, from Corona-Santiago HS and the son of former San Diego Padre Mike Darr, was the third Tiger to walk on four pitches in the final inning following an infield single by CF Sean Smith (pictured).

It was the Tigers' second extra-inning game against MSAC in a week as the Mounties came from behind in an 11-inning, 9-8 non-conference win in Walnut last Tuesday (Feb. 16).

Riverside (9-3 overall) trailed, 1-0, in the top of the first when a pair of infield errors put Dallas Reed on second base. After an infield out moved Reed to third, freshman DH Johnny Juarez singled Reed home.

Freshman 3B Dean Miller (Riverside / Ramona HS) atoned for his two miscues when he slashed a double down the right-field line which chased home sophomore RF Casey Sheehan (Redlands / Redlands East Valley HS '14 / UC Riverside), who also had doubled, with the tying run. Miller, Smith and Darr each had two hits for RCC.

Freshman RHP Cole Young (Corona / Norco HS '14 / USC) pitched the final two frames, allowed two hits and struck out three to pick up his first decision (1-0) of the season. Freshman starting RHP Christian Stiegele (Murrieta / Murrieta Mesa HS '15) went the first 5.0 innings for RCC and allowed only the unearned run on two hits.

All told, the RCC pitching staff allowed only the unearned run on five hits, zero walks and struck out 12 MSAC batters.

Freshman RHP Lorenzo Carrillo (Covina HS), who came into the game with two outs in the ninth, pitched the final 1-1/3 innings and received the loss (2-1) for the Mounties (5-5 overall).

Sophomore catcher Kory Brown (Covina HS) had two hits for MSAC.

Riverside returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 27, when it hosts the Mt. San Jacinto College (MSJC) Eagles in a non-conference game at 5 p.m.
