Riverside Wins Seventh Straight with 3-1 Win at East Los Angeles Saturday

Riverside Wins Seventh Straight with 3-1 Win at East Los Angeles Saturday

MONTEREY PARK -- Sophomore starting RHP Sabino Ramirez gained his third win in as many starts and the visiting Riverside City College (RCC) Tigers baseball team posted a solid 3-1 non-conference road win over the East Los Angeles College (ELAC) Huskies Saturday evening (Feb. 13).

Ramirez, who hails from Cathedral City HS '14, went the first 6.0 innings and yielded one run (earned) on three hits and one walk. He struck out seven to improve to 3-0. Freshman DH/RHP Ryan Mota (Fontana / Kaiser HS '14) -- the fifth of five RCC hurlers -- pitched the ninth inning and struck out two as he recorded his first save of the season.

Riverside (7-1 overall) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Mota singled home sophomore LF Garrison Cole (Palm Desert / Xavier Prep), who had doubled with two outs.

The Tigers broke a 1-1 tie in the top of the third with a pair of runs to conclude the game's scoring. Freshman CF Jack Bailey (San Diego / Torrey Pines HS '15) reached first on a throwing error by SS Seve Romo and went to second base when the throw sailed into foul territory. Sophomore SS Brody Weiss (Denver, CO / Regis Jesuit HS '13) promptly doubled home Bailey (unearned). Weiss later scored on a wild pitch for the proverbial insurance run.

East Los Angeles (2-4 overall) tied the game at 1-1 in the second inning when Anthony Mayorga reached first base on a fielder's choice and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by Ismael Martinez. Nathan Luna went two for four to pace the Huskies.

Riverside won its seventh consecutive game after opening the season with a 4-2 loss at Cuesta (Jan. 28).

For East L.A., starting RHP Alberto Lopez lasted 2.1 innings and allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits with three walks and zero strikeouts as his record fell to 0-1.
Both teams return to action on Tuesday, Feb. 16, at 2 p.m. when RCC visits the Mt. San Antonio College Mounties and East L.A. hosts the Santa Barbara City College Vaqueros in a pair of non-conference games.
