Tigers Win 5-1 over Visiting L.A. Pierce Tuesday for Fifth in a Row

RIVERSIDE --Sean Smith singled thrice and scored twice to pace the host Riverside City College (RCC) Tigers baseball team to a solid 5-1 non-conference home win over the Los Angeles Pierce College (LAPC) Brahmas Tuesday afternoon (Feb. 9) at the Evans Sports Complex.

Smith -- a sophomore CF from Highland (Redlands HS '130 -- singled and scored an unearned run in the first inning, singled and scored in the third inning, drew a walk in the fourth inning, and singled to drive in a run in the sixth.

Sophomore SS Brody Weiss (Denver, CO / Regis Jesuit HS '13) doubled to drive in Smith in the third and scored on a sacrifice fly by freshman DH Ryan Mota (Fontana / Kaiser HS '14).

Freshman RHP Christian Stiegele (Murrieta / Murrieta Mesa HS '15) came on in relief of RCC starting sophomore RHP Ryan Avila (Rancho Cucamonga / Rancho Cucamonga HS '13) -- who scattered eight hits and allowed one unearned run -- to begin the fifth inning. Stiegele pitched the fifth, sixth and seventh innings and allowed zero hits, one walk and struck out two to receive credit for the win (1-0).

For L.A. Pierce, sophomore SS Jordan Abushahla (Taft HS '14) had three hits, as did freshman DH Deion Fernando (El camino HS '14). LAPC starting freshman RHP Tom Wilson (Notre Dame HS '14) lasted only 4.0 innings and allowed five hits, three runs (two earned) with three walks and five strikeouts as his record fell to 0-1.

Riverside (5-1 overall) will host the East Los Angeles College (ELAC) Huskies in the opening game of a "home and home" series on Friday, Feb. 12, at 5 p.m. before visiting ELAC on Saturday, Feb. 13, at 5 p.m.

L.A. Pierce (3-3 overall) will face Los Angeles Mission College on Thursday, Feb. 11, at 2 p.m.
