Tigers Tally Twice in Eighth; Hold on for 8-7 Win over West L.A. Saturday

RIVERSIDE -- Freshman 3B Dean Miller (Riverside / Ramona HS '15) drove in the go-ahead run on an infield single in the bottom of the eighth and sophomore RF Casey Sheehan (Redlands / Redlands East Valley '14) beat out a ground ball to short stop for an insurance run-producing single as the Riverside City College (RCC) Tigers baseball team came from behind to defeat the visiting West Los Angeles College (WLAC) Wildcats, 8-7, in a non-conference home win Saturday afternoon at the Evans Sports Complex.

Miller's nubber to the right of the mound allowed sophomore SS Brody Weiss (Denver, CO / Regis Jesuit HS '13) to score the go-ahead run, breaking a 6-6 tie. Weiss reached first base when he struck out on a wild pitch, stole second base and went to third on another wild pitch.

Miller's safety atoned for a first-inning error with two out and no one on base which opened the gates eventually for two unearned runs. Sheehan went three for five with two runs scored and three RBI to pace the Tigers.

Riverside (4-1 overall) trailed, 5-1, after 1-1/2 innings, but scored thrice in the third and twice in fifth. Garret McKee (Hemet / Hemet HS '15) -- who is pictured -- smacked a two-out, two-run double in the fifth to give the Tigers a 6-5 lead, only to see WLAC tie the game at 6-6 with a run in the seventh.

Sophomore reliever Andrew O'Brien (Corona / Corona HS '13) came on in relief of RCC freshman starting RHP Brandt Baker (Beaumont / Beaumont HS '14) and pitched the fifth through eighth innings plus to get credit for the win (1-0). Freshman RHP Cole Young (Corona / Norco HS '14) inherited Andrew Figueroa, who had doubled off of O'Brien to open the top of the ninth. Figueroa scored on a sacrifice fly for the game's final run as Young received credit for the save.

Tomas Gutierrez (0-2) pitched the seventh and eighth innings and absorbed the lossfor West L.A. (2-2 overall). Leadoff batter Harrison McElroy went two for four to pace the Wildcats.

Riverside will return to action on Tuesday, Feb. 9, when it hosts the Los Angeles Pierce College (LAPC) Brahmas in a 2 p.m. non-conference start.
