Riverside Scores Six in Sixth En Route to a 13-2 Win over Grossmont Thursday

RIVERSIDE -- Spotting the visitors a first-inning run, the Riverside City College (RCC) Tigers baseball team came from behind and then scored six runs in the sixth inning en route a 13-2 nonconference victory over the visiting Grossmont College Griffins Thursday afternoon, Feb. 4, at the Evans Sports Complex.

Riverside (2-1 overall), took a short-lived 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third inning when sophomore LF Garrison Cole (Xavier Prep) blooped a double off the glove of a diving SS Michael Diffley (Granite Hill HS) which enabled freshman 1B John Gonzalez (from third base) and sophomore CF Sean Smith (from first base) to score.

After Grossmont (0-2 overall) tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the fourth on a groundout, RCC scored twice in the bottom of the fifth to take a 4-2 lead and was never headed. In the fortunate fifth, Gonzalez singled and then scored (one of his four runs) on a two-out double into the left-field corner off the bat of sophomore SS Brody Weiss (Denver, CO / Regis Jesuit HS) for a 3-2 lead.

Weiss, one of four sons of former 1988 American League Rookie of the Year and current manager of the Colorado Rockies, Walt Weiss, then scored on a RBI single by Cole. Cole went two for three with a run scored and four RBI, one of which occured when he was hit by a pitch in a three-run seventh inning.

RCC then scored six runs in the sixth to essentially put the game away.

Sophomore starting RHP Angel Delgado (Beaumont HS) went the first 6.0 innings and delivered 90 pitches. He scattered three hits and allowed the two runs (one earned), walked two and struck out five to improve to 1-1.

For the Griffins, freshman catcher Domenic Donato (Valhalla HS) went one for two and had the lone RBI for Grossmont. Starting sophomore RHP Craig Grubbe (University City HS) went 5.1 innings and allowed seven runs (five earned) on seven hits, walked two and struck out one and asborbed his first loss of the season (0-1).

Riverside returns to action on Friday, Feb. 5, at 2 p.m. when it hosts the College of the Desert Roadrunners. Grossmont will host the Chaffey College Panthers on Saturday, Feb. 6, at 12 p.m.
