SAN MARCOS -- Dropping a pair of close decisions over the weekend, the visiting Riverside City College (RCC) Tigers baseball team, seeded No. 18 in the regionals, saw its season come to a close against the No. 1-seeded Palomar College Comets in a best-two-out-of-three series of the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) Southern California Regional Playoffs.
Riverside City (22-17 overall) lost, 7-3, on Friday (May 1) and then lost, 4-2, on Saturday (May 2) at Meyers Field on the Palomar College campus.
In the all-time playoff history, RCC had previously won all three meetings (1998 Super Regional at L.A. Harbor: 21-1; 2000 Super Regional at RCC: 13-3 & 13-4). Both teams had last played each other in 2007 when RCC won at home, 7-5 (Feb. 9). Friday's meeting was the first playoff game between the two clubs played at Palomar.
In Friday's game, sophomore LF David Schuknecht (Palm Desert / Palm Desert HS) socked his ninth home run of the season -- a solo shot in the sixth inning -- which tied the game at 3-3. In the bottom of the seventh, a bases-loaded triple (a groundball just inside first base which proceeded to roll down the right-field line) and a wild pitch broke the aforementioned 3-3 tie to account for the 7-3 final.
Sophomore RHP Tyler Rowe (Rancho Cucamonga / Los Osos HS) pitched the first 6-1/3 innings and allowed five hits, seven runs, six earned, five walks and sustained the loss (4-4 overall). On offense, RCC managed only four hits.
On Saturday, Palomar played as the visiting team and rolled up a 4-0 lead with a run in the third and three in the fifth and cruised to the 4-2 win. RCC scored twice in the bottom of the eighth to get close. For RCC, freshman starting RHP Tyler Tungate (Downey / Downey HS) went the first 6-2/3 innings and allowed four hits, four runs (three earned), three walks and struck out two as his record leveled at 3-3.
Schuknecht and freshman SS Brody Weiss (Denver, CO / Regis Jesuit HS) each went two for four with one RBI for Riverside in its finale.
