Tigers Commit Five Errors, Allow Four Unearned Runs in 5-2 Home Loss to Santa Barbara Wednesday

RIVERSIDE -- The Riverside City College (RCC) Tigers baseball team committed five errors leading to four unearned runs and a 5-2 nonconference home loss to the visiting Santa Barbara City College (SBCC) Vaqueros Wednesday (April 1) evening at the Evans Sports Complex.

Santa Barbara CIty (21-6 overall), in the top of the second inning, parlayed an infield error, a dropped fly ball in right field and -- with two outs -- back-to-back run-producing doubles to overcome a 1-0 deficit for a 3-1 lead. Sophomore 3B Matt Gimenez (Los Alamitos) drilled a RBI double down the left-field line before sophomore 2B Spencer Erdman (Santa Clara) doubled home a pair of runs and went to third on a outfield miscue.

The Vaqueros added a run in the fifth inning on a double steal and an unearned run in the ninth.

Riverside (18-9 overall) scored in the first and eighth innings. Sophomore DH Garrett Dean reached first when he drilled a pitch back to the box which caromed off P Sean Barry for an infield single. Dean advanced to second on a walk, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a RBI single bygado  sophomore LF David Schuknecht (Palm Desert).

In the eighth, Schuknecht walked and scored on a RBI single by 3B Anthony Ayala. In the last three innings, the Tigers drew six walks and singled three times, but could only scratch out one run.

RCC starting sophomore RHP Angel Delgado ( ) went the first six-plus innings and allowed seven hits, four runs (one earned), walked two and struck out five as his record fell to 2-2. His SBCC counterpart, Barry, went the first 6-2/3 innings, scattered four hits, allowed just the first-inning run (earned) walked one and struck out six to improve to 5-2. Freshman RHP Jake Keily (Lancaster) allowed one hit and one walk, but completed the ninth inning for his second save.

Both teams continue nonconference action this week. RCC will host the Taft College Cougars on Thursday, Apr. 2, at 2 p.m. SBCC will face the Reedley College Tigers (at Bakersfield) on Friday, Apr. 3, at 2:30 p.m.
