Tigers Remain Undefeated with 4-3 Home Win over East L.A. Friday
RIVERSIDE -- Brody Weiss drove in two runs with a fifth-inning triple and left-hander Austin Sodders went the first seven innings as the Riverside City College (RCC) Tigers baseball team logged a 4-3 nonconference win Friday afternoon (Feb. 6) over the visiting East Los Angeles College Huskies at the Evans Sports Complex.
Weiss (son of former Major League Rookie of the Year Walt Weiss), a freshman third baseman from Denver, CO / Regis Jesuit HS, delivered a 1-0 pitch to right-center field with two outs in the fifth as David Schuknecht (who had singled to center field) and Garrett Dean (who singled to right field) both came home to give RCC a 4-0 lead.
Weiss, Dean and Roosevelt "R.J." Bates each had two singles for Riverside (5-0 overall).
Sodders, a sophomore LHP from Moreno Valley (Canyon Springs HS) who tossed a complete game in the Tigers' season opener (Jan. 29), went the first 7.0 innings (105 pitches, 79 strikes) to improve to 2-0.
Sodders, whose father Mike played at Orange Coast College and Arizona State U. in the 1980s, allowed seven hits, two runs (both earned), one walk and struck out nine.
Freshman LHP Dallas Burk came on to start the eighth inning and pitched 1-2/3 innings before yielding to sophomore RHP David Robles (San Bernardino / Rialto HS) who retired the final batter in the ninth and notched his third save.
East Los Angeles (1-3 overall) parlayed four singles and a double steal into two runs in the sixth. ELAC then added a run in the ninth on a pair of singles and two walks, the last of which came with the bases loaded.
Sophomore RHP Gabriel Ramos went the first 6.0 innings for ELAC and allowed eight hits, four runs (all earned), one walk and struck out six.
Both teams return to action on Saturday, Feb. 7, to conclude this two-game home and home series in Monterey Park. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
