RIVERSIDE -- It ended up being "one o' those" games as Casey Worden doubled in the fifth inning and scored the only run of the game as the visiting Saddleback College Gauchos posted a 1-0 Orange Empire Conference (OEC) victory over the host Riverside City College (RCC) Tigers baseball team Tuesday evening (Apr. 22) at the Evans Sports Complex.
Worden, a freshman catcher from Newport Coast, doubled to left field on the first pitch he saw, then was sacrificed to third. The next batter, freshman CF Luke Jarvis (San Diego) grounded a 1-2 pitch to shortstop as Worden held at third, but the ball was misplayed for an error and then Worden scampered home with the unearned run for the 1-0 lead.
And that proved to be enough for Saddleback (21-14, 12-8 OEC, third place) and starting sophomore RHP Anthony Shew (Mission Viejo) who went on to notch his fourth complete game of the season and improve to 8-2. Along the way, Shew delievered 125 pitches (84 strikes) and allowed four hits, including a double, and one walk while recording 12 strikeouts.
Freshman DH Brett Barker (Laguna Niguel) had two hits for the Gauchos.
His counterpart, RCC sophomore starting LHP Bryan Conant (Alta Loma / Alta Loma HS) also went the distance and allowed six hits and one walk while striking out eight on 124 pitches (81 strikes). Conant's record fell to 3-1 and he lowered his earned run average to 1.49.
RCC sophomore SS Nick King (Palm Springs / Palm Springs HS) had a double and single in four at bats to pace the Tigers.
The loss dropped Riverside's record to 18-16 officially, 11-9 in OEC. For RPI and playoff seeding purposes, RCC's three-game non-conference series (one win and two losses) versus Western Nevada College, a non-California Community College, has been suspended until the playoff seedings are announced on Sunday, Apr. 27.
Both teams will play their regular season finale on Thursday, Apr. 24, at 6 p.m. in Mission Viejo.
