Glendale Thwarts Tigers, 6-2, in Sunday makeup game
Using some timely hitting, the visiting Glendale College Vaqueros thwarted the host Riverside City College Tigers, 6-2, in a non-conference makeup game Sunday afternoon (Feb. 9) at the Evans Sports Complex.
Glendale (3-3) scored single runs in each of the first two innings and led, 2-0, heading into the bottom of the fourth when, with two outs, a single by RCC sophomore catcher Steven Camberos (Hacienda Heights / Los Altos HS) set the stage for freshman RF David Robles (San Bernardino / Rialto HS) who tripled him home to cut the deficit to 2-1.
But in the top of the fifth, the Vaqueros loaded the bases on a walk, a hit batter and, with two outs, a screaming line drive infield single off the glove of RCC sophomore RHP Kyle Murray (La Crescenta / Crescenta Valley HS). Had Murray made the miraculous catch, he would have retired the side, but up stepped catcher Mark Strazzerri (Northridge / Alemany HS) who rifled a bases-clearing double to right field to make the score 5-1, Glendale.
Strazzerri also had a single for a two-hit game to lead Glendale. Camberos also had two hits (both singles) to pace Riverside (3-3).
Glendale starting RHP Angel Rodriguez (Winnetka / Chatsworth HS) went the first six innings, allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits and two walks with four strikeouts to improve to 1-1. Freshman RHP Jackson Sigman (Austin, TX / Hyde Park) tossed the final three frames to notch his first save. Murray (6.0 innings, five runs earned, on seven hits and one walk with four Ks) fell to 0-1.
Both teams resume non-conference action on Tuesday, Feb. 11. Glendale will visit the Saddleback College Gauchos and RCC will host the Fresno City College Rams in a 5 p.m. start.
