Tigers Lose to Bakersfield & at MiraCosta to Conclude Team Competition; Vialpando & Wells Advance to CCCAA Pairs

OCEANSIDE -- Losing a pair of 3-2 decisions, the Riverside City College (RCC) Tigers women's beach volleyball team had the dual team portion of its schedule come to a close at the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) South Regional Championships Tuesday (May 2) at MiraCosta College.

Riverside City (9-9 overall) lost, 3-2, to the Bakersfield College (BC) Renegades and lost, 3-2, as well to the host MiraCosta College (MC) Spartans Tuesday (May 2).

In the loss to Bakersfield, the Tigers' No. 1 doubles tandem of sophomore Marissa Vialpando and sophomore Lauren Wells won in straight sets, 21-17, 21-17. The RCC duo also defeated the top pair from MiraCosta by the set scores of 25-23, 18-21, 15-11.

Other RCC pairs posting wins were No. 4 frosh Hailey Krewson and Briana Fonseca winning, 21-17, 20-22, 16-14, against Bakersfield and the No. 3 tandem of sophomore Melissa Moe and frosh Kellsy Russell winning, 21-18, 19-21, 15-6, against host MiraCosta.

Because of going 5-0 last Friday (Apr. 28) at the Orange Empire Conference (OEC) Championships, Vialpando and Wells will participate in the CCCAA Pairs Championships on Friday, May 5. West Valley College in Saratoga will host this weekend's action.

In its second season of existence, RCC is guided by second-year RCC head women's beach volleyball co-associate head coaches Jamie Hofman and Monica Hayes-Trainer. In 2017, RCC finished third in the OEC standings with a 5-2 record.
