Vialpando & Gonzaga Finish in Top 16 in State at CCCAA Championships

EL CAJON -- Winning a "round of 32" match before losing a "round of 16" match, a pair from the inaugural Riverside City College (RCC) Tigers women's beach (sand) volleyball team had its season come to an end Saturday (May 7) at the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) Championships at Grossmont College.

RCC's No. 1 pair of frosh Marissa Vialpando (Riverside / Notre Dame HS '15) and frosh Sabrina Gonzaga (Moreno Valley / Citrus Hill HS '14) defeated the Bakersfield College tandem of Alyssa Mathews and Sarah Aurin (seeded No. 13), 22-20, 21-18, in their opening round match on Saturday, May 7, before losing in three sets to No. 4-seeded tandem of sophomore Brianna Sizemore and frosh Cady Francis from MiraCosta College, 21-10. 19-21. 15-12.

"They (Vialpando and Gonzaga) played great and represented RCC to the fullest," said first-year RCC head women's beach volleyball coach Jamie Hofman.

In dual matches, Riverside City was 8-6 overall, 2-5 in Orange Empire Conference (OEC) play, tied for fifth place.
