SAN DIEGO -- Gaining a pair of victories to lift the lid on its inaugural regular season match, the 2016 Riverside City College (RCC) Tigers women's beach (sand) volleyball squad defeated the San Diego City College (SDCC) Knights twice last Friday (Mar. 4) at Mission Bay Park.
Mt. San Jacinto College was originally scheduled to face RCC in the second match, but the Eagles had to leave early.

RCC practices at Andulka Park, which is located at 5201 Chicago Avenue, Riverside, CA 92507.
Women's Beach Volleyball, also known as Women's Sand Volleyball, is RCC's newest of the 18 varsity intercollegiate sports and the first to be added by the College since women's water polo was added for the 1996 season.
Jamie Hofman (nee Krewiet), the associate head coach of the RCC women's volleyball (fall) program, is the Tigers' head coach for women's beach volleyball. Her assistants are Monica Hayes-Trainer, the current RCC head women's (indoor) volleyball coach (2008-present), who finished her eighth season at RCC last fall, as well as Liz Younglove and James Webster
As expected, several Tigers from last fall's indoor season are making the transition to the outdoor game. Leading the way are sophomore OH Amanda Barker (Lake Arrowhead / Rim of the World HS '14), sophomore setter Melissa Moe (Riverside / Poly HS '14), frosh OH Marissa Vialpando (Riverside / Notre Dame HS '15) and frosh OH Lauren Wells (Corona Woodcrest Christian HS '15).
Also coming over from last fall's RCC's indoor team are frosh Briana Fonseca (Desert Hot Springs / Desert Hot Springs HS '15), frosh libero Sabrina Gonzaga (Moreno Valley / Citrus Hill HS '14), sophomore Hailey Krewson (Rancho Cucamonga / Alta Loma HS '12), and sophomore Bethany Walsh (Riverside / Ramona HS '15).
New to the squad are frosh Yaneli Fernandez (Riverside / Riverside Christian HS '15), frosh Tierra Lloyd (Moreno Valley / Vista del Lago HS '13), and sophomore transfer Tiarah McDaniel (Perris / Paramount HS '14 / Cerritos CC).
The outdoor (beach) sand volleyball has some changes from the indoor sport. To wit, teams consist of five pairs of players, competition is played in a best two-out-of-three games (sets) format with the winner being the pair that reaches 21 points first and leading by at least two points within the first two games (sets). If necessary, set three would be played to 15 points, with the winner needing to win by two points.
Additionally, in beach (sand) volleyball, on a block attempt where a touch with the ball is made, that counts as one of the three contacts.
