This Time Last Year - September 8, 2020

We are all missing Riverside City College atheltics. This past week would have been the first week of 2020 fall competition. Let's look back on how our teams were doing at this point last year!

Football

After a disappointing finish to the 2018 season, the Riverside City College football team had its sights set on greatness in the 2019 campaign. They came out with vengeance and dominated their season opener against El Camino by the final score of 55-17. After being tabbed the #3 team in the nation, Riverside displayed a strong showing on both sides of the ball. Two quarterbacks threw at least one touchdown, four different wide receivers hauled in a touchdown pass and two cornerbacks rose up for an interception.

Sophomore Mike Irwin, who was deemed the week one starter, threw for four touchdowns and 233 yards. Freshman Jacob Barlage followed with one touchdown and an even 100 yards passing. Sophomore wide receiver Giovanni Sanders caught two touchdown passes for 50 yards, while sophomore Tyler Kennedy hauled in four catches form 68 yards and a touchdown.

Sophomore James Hansen led the defensive brigade with nine tackles, while freshman safety Shawn Dourseau and freshman cornerback Kylen Ross each recorded an interception.

Women's Indoor Volleyball

The Tigers kicked off the season with a victory over Cerro Coso, but dropped the following two games to top ranked Grossmont and Long Beach. In the victory, the swinging duo of sophomore Vashti Elias-Romero and freshman Josephine Sua paced the offense. Elias-Romero recorded 21 kills, while Sua followed with 15. Sua got it done on the defensive end by recording a team high six digs, while Elias-Romero recorded five.

Men's Cross Country

The Tigers got off to a strong start with a victory at the Redlands Invitational, backed by a second place finish at the Palomar Invitational. They saw five runners placed in the top-20 with freshman Jordan Wilson earning RCC's top mark at 19:57, earning him fourth overall. Freshman Alberto Lopez clocked a 20:14 finishing time to earn seventh place.

Women's Cross Country

After the Tigers kicked the season off with a third place finish at the Redlands Invitational, they continued on the following week with a victory at the Palomar Invitational. Sophomore Emiliana Merida Cano placed second overall with a time of 20:05 to pace her team in a full 5K. Freshman Aeriel Madrigal followed in fourth place with a time of 20:36, backed by sophomore Ariel Martinez who finished with a mark reading 20:48 to earn sixth overall.
