Riverside Athletics Week in Review – 10/1/19: Football Edges Long Beach, Men’s Water Polo Defeats DI Cal Poly, Indoor Volleyball Dominates Santa Ana

No. 1 Football

Top ranked Riverside saw themselves in a late-game dogfight with No. 16 Long Beach as it took a two-minute drill to defeat the Vikings by a final score of 31-28. After facing a fourth down in a do-or-die situation, the Tigers converted and moved the chains with a connection from quarterback Jacob Barlage to wide receiver Rolandiss Whitener. Barlage capped the drive with a game-winning touchdown pass to wide receiver Giovanni Sanders with 25 seconds remaining in the game. Dylan Laurent and Sanders each hauled in 10 receptions and combined for 260 total yards. They also scored a touchdown each. Tyler Kinslow and Zechariah Holifield recorded seven tackles, while Rey Estes rose up for an interception.  

Earlier in the month, Head Coach Tom Craft was recognized for his excellence by the California Community College Board of Governors during their site visit to RCC. The Board of Governors recognized his strengths in recruiting high quality athletes and transferring them to four-year universities despite the lack of quality facilities. Men's Water Polo

The Tigers went 2-2 in the 2019 Cuesta Tournament with victories over Division I Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and West Valley College. In the victory over Cal Poly, sophomore Kenny Wulf netted a team-high four goals, while sophomore goalkeeper Leonardo Monges was the main facilitator with five assists. Monges also recorded nine saves and earned the victory in the cage. Freshman Jared Salas paced the defense with three steals, while freshman Vincenzo Inguanta drew a pair of ejections.

Women's Indoor Volleyball

The Tigers went 1-1 in Orange Empire Conference (OEC) play last week highlighted by a three-set victory over Santa Ana. In the win, sophomore Vashti Elias-Romero hammered home 11 kills and recorded 16 digs – both acting as team high marks. Sophomore Sadie Arganda manned the back line with 12 digs and a service ace, while freshman Hailey Gray recorded 17 assists. Freshman Amara Hill was a monster at the net with three block assists, while freshman Keeley Hober recorded a solo stuff and assisted on two blocks.
