Riverside Athletics Week in Review – 9/10/19: Football Shows No Mercy against El Camino, Women’s XC Wins Palomar Invitational

Football

Head Coach Tom Craft entered his 10th year at the helm of the Tiger football program and looked to start off on another strong note against No. 9 El Camino. While the Tigers struggled with penalties and offensive rhythm early, it took little time to settle in leading to a 55-17 routing over the Warriors. Sophomore wide receiver and kick returner Tyler Kennedy was named SCFA National Division All-Purpose/Special Teams Player of the Week after totaling 190 all-purpose yards and two touchdowns. He hauled in four catches for 64 yards encompassing a 33-yard receiving TD. He later exploded for a 99-yard kickoff return to the house late in the third quarter. The Tiger defense allowed a mere three points and halted El Camino to 124 total yards and a 12 percent third down efficiency rating. Kylen Ross and Shawn Dourseau each recorded an interception. Sophomore Mike Irwin earned the nod under center and went 11-for-18 with 233 yards and four touchdown passes. He added one rushing touchdown on the Tiger's opening drive.

Women's Cross Country

Five of the Tigers runners on the women's side landed in the top-10 at the Palomar Invitational on Friday morning to pace the field. A pair of runners landed in the top-five leading to Riverside hauling in a victory. The course deemed challenging as Guajome Park in San Diego, CA presents a tough uphill battle – literally. With nearly a mile of uphill running, Riverside dug deep and handled the tough terrain. Following a strong start to her 2019 campaign at the Redlands Invitational just a week ago, sophomore Emiliana Merida Cano placed second overall with a time of 20:05 to pace her team in a full 5K. Freshman Aeriel Madrigal followed in fourth place with a time of 20:36, backed by sophomore Ariel Martinez who finished with a mark reading 20:48 to earn sixth overall. Freshman tandem Corrine Melendez and Briana Rodriguez finished consecutively. Melendez edged her out for ninth place with a time of 21:10, while Rodriguez crossed the finish line at a mark of 21:14.

Men's Cross Country

The men placed second by a mere four points despite landing four runners in the top-10. The men were slightly bested by El Camino by finishing in second place. Freshman Jordan Wilson paced the Tigers for the second-straight week by finishing with a mark of 22:13 to earn seventh place. Sophomore Ricardo Cruz followed with an eighth place finish after crossing the finish line at a time of 22:13. Freshman Alberto Lopez rounded out the top 10 with a mark of 22:19, while freshman Cody Patrick earned an 11th place finish with a time of 22:19. A week prior, RCC reigned supreme at the Redlands Invitational where they beat a handful of Division III competitors and strong community college opponents.

Women's Indoor Volleyball

The Tigers went 2-1 on the week highlighted by sweeping the field at the San Bernadino Valley College Quad tournament last Friday. They defeated West LA and SBVC in straight sets. A number of clutch performances and players emerged as highlighted by the offensive displays of sophomore outside Jasmine Urban. The returner has taken on a larger role in the scheme and has recorded a pair of double-digit kill games. She recorded 11 kills in a loss to Long Beach and 10 kills in a victory over West LA. Freshman Hailey Gray has taken the reigns of the offense acting as the main facilitator. She has served up 32 assists in the past two wins. Freshman Josephine Sua began her Tiger career on a high note as seen in six kills in a win over SBVC.
