Swimming & Diving: Men Finish Fourth, Women Eighth at CCCAA State Championships

A grip of competitors for the Riverside City College men's and women's swimming and diving team landed the Tigers in the top 10 on the final day of the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) State Championships on Saturday. The men finished fourth overall with a point total of 247 points, while the women placed eighth overall with a point tally of 172.

The men missed third place by a mere 72 points. Sierra College hauled in the title, while Diablo Valley College placed second. Mt. San Antonio who placed third.

Freshman Erick Fathoni was the top point getter for the men's side with 47. He landed on the podium twice with a second place finish in the 200 Free (1:38.21) and third place in the 200 IM (1:52.40). He finished just outside the top three in the 100 Free (45.72) to earn fourth place.

Sophomore Javier Bernal earned 43 points highlighted by a second place finish in the 200 Fly (1:52.32). He earned a pair of sixth place finishes in the 200 IM (1:53.59) and the 400 IM (4:12.23). Freshman Zack Thelwell missed the podium by a hair in a pair of events with fourth place finishes in the 50 Free (20.66) and the 200 Back (1:55.47).

The women were led by freshman Hannah Beth Cain and accumulated a team-high 19 points. She had her strongest finish in the 200 Back (2:12.29) to earn her fifth place. Prior, she finished 12th overall in the 100 Back (1:02.73). Freshman Liz Bouffort placed eighth overall in the 100 Free (54.23), while Emelia Bennett earned a 10th place mark in the 200 Fly (2:17.84).

Freshman Celina Melgoza placed eighth in the three meter dive with 153.59 points.
