Riverside Continues to Set Standard at Cerritos Invitational

The Riverside City College track and field program competed in the Cerritos Invitational this past Friday and picked up right where they left off. Despite this meet not acting a s a scoring meet, the Tigers continued to run the show with multiple top-10 finishes leading to state qualifying marks

Freshman Joshua Briscoe earned a top finish in the 800 M after snapping the tape at a time of 1:59.31. The Tigers 4 x 400 M Relay squad earned the gold medal as well as freshman Eric Vivano. Freshman Julian Rodriguez-Richards, sophomore Jamal Palmar and sophomore Keylan Dennis dominated with a clip of 3:15.59. Their time was approximately six seconds faster the second-place finishing team from Division II Cal State Los Angeles.  

Key. Dennis shined in the 400 M by placing second with a mark of 48.06. Freshman Julian Richards-Rodriguez backed him with a ninth place finish at a time of 49.71. He continued on to finished in the top-15 in the 200 M with a clip reading 21.92.

The 1,500 M run was highlighted by freshman duo Matthew Lieberman and Ricardo Ruiz. Lieberman placed sixth overall with a mark of 4:11.68, while Cruz finished just behind in eighth place with a clip of 4:14.78. Sophomore Alejandro Hernandez and freshman Jerry Martinez finished consecutively in the 5,000 M as Hernandez edged out Martinez for seventh place with a time of 16:27.30. Martinez earned a time of 16:49.05.

Hernandez continued on for his second top-eight finish as he earned fourth place in the 3,000 Steeplechase at a time of 10:12.14.

Sophomore Dillon Lay continued to thrive in the 110 M Hurdles with a second place finish at 14.93. Freshman Jalen Jefferson followed in fourth place with a time of 15.23.

Sophomore Justin Reed earned a third place finish in the High Jump with a leap at 6' 0.75". He continued on to place fourth in the Long Jump with a mark of 21' 10.75". Sophomore Alec Jones reigned supreme in the Discus with a gold medal toss of 162' 6", backed by a second place finish in the Hammer at 183' 7".

Highlighting the performances for the women was Emiliana Merida Cano placing first in the 5,000 M at a time of 19:25.13. She finished approximately 12 seconds faster than the second place finisher from Division II Cal State Los Angeles.

Sophomore Angelique Hudson continues to act as the front runner in the state in the Shot Put as she earned another victory with a toss of 39' 8".

Sophomore Jayea McMillan placed fifth in the 400 M with a clip of 59.56, followed by a seventh place finish from sophomore Madeline Corner with a time of 59.84. Freshman Salley Tayler earned the top spot in the Discus with a winning mark of 127' 2", while freshman Keiana Turner backed her with a 120'1" mark to place second. Turner and Salley swapped places in the Hammer as Turner earned the gold medal with a mark of 143' 11", whil eSalley recorded a second-place mark of 143' 3".

Freshman Alana Wilson placed top-10 in the 200 M with a mark of 25.37 to earn ninth overall.

Sophomore Sujey Esteva and freshman Aily Camacho finished consecutively in the 800 M with Esteva edging Camacho out for fifth place with a mark reading 2:28.64. Esteva continued on to earned a fifth-place mark in the 1,500 M at a time of 4:54.58, while sophomore Maribel Madera earned a sixth-place finish with a time of 5:10.07.
