Track & Field Set State Marks at 41st Annual Aztec Invitational
The Riverside City College track and field program competed in the 41st Annual Aztec Invitational this past Friday against various levels of competition. Both sides earned strong results by overtaking a handful of state-pacing marks.
Combined between the men and women, the Tigers currently boast 22 marks that land within top five in the state. Furthermore, Riverside is responsible for seven state-pacing marks in various events. They continued to build upon their domination this past weekend against top competitors in the nation.
Sophomore speedster Antonio Mitchell clocked in a strong time in the 100 M with a qualifying mark reading 10.28. He recently snapped the school record in the 100 M with a mark of 10.16. Sophomore Jamal Palmer followed with a 10.67 mark in the same event, thus acting as a qualifying mark.
Sophomore Dillon Lay earned a qualifying mark in the 110 M Hurdles with a time of 15.25. He later followed to earn a qualifying mark in the 400 M Hurdles at a time of 55.61.
A 4 x 100 M Relay team comprised of sophomore Keylan Dennis, sophomore Jabriel Smith, Kea. Dennis and Mitchell earned a state-pacing mark at a time of 40.31.
Sophomore Keanon Dennis placed fifth in the 400 M and earned a qualifying time of 48.14. His mark currently stands as the seventh-best in the state.
Sophomore Enrique Villa and freshman Mohamed Mohammed finished consecutively in the 800 M. Both earned qualifying marks with Villa crossing the finish line at 1:55.34 and Mohammed following at 1:55.43. Sophomore Austin Dai earned fourth place in the 5,000 M to earn an qaulifying mark at a time of 15:16.62.
Sophomore Marcos Gonzalez continues to dominate the community college field in the Javelin with a mark of 191' 4", which is just three feet and four inches off his state-pacing mark.
Sophomore Alec Jones worked to earn a qualifying clip in the Shot Put with a mark reading 45' 10.75" and a qualifying mark in the Discus at a distance reading 143' 11". Sophomore Trevor Nakata earned a qualifying mark in the Hammer with a mark of 153' 1".
The women earned multiple state qualifying marks at the invitational in various events.
Sophomore Angelique Hudson set a state-best 43' 11.75" mark in the Phot Put to continue to pace the state. She holds a strong two-foot lead on the second-place competitor from Diablo Valley. Sophomore Tayler Salley earned a qualifying mark in the Discus at a clip of 138' 1" which is just shy of her season best mark.
A 4 x 100 M Relay team comprised of Mariah Allain, Annayah Pelt, Alana Wilson and Alondra Gonzalez earned a qualifying mark of 47.58 which falls approximately one second above their season-best mark.
Sophomore Madeline Corner clocked in a qualifying mark of 1:04.80 in the 400 M Hurdles, while sophomore Sujey Esteva placed sixth in the 5,000 M with a qualifying time of 18:30.03.
