Riverside Athletics Week in Review – 2/11/19: Men’s & Women’s Tennis Undefeated, Swimming & Diving, Track & Field Kick off Campaign in Dominant Fashion
The Tigers went 1-1 on the week highlighted by a dominant victory over the Orange Coast College Pirates in Orange Empire Conference (OEC) action. Four of Riverside's five starters landed in double-digit scoring with Dayna Dewitt pacing the pack. She recorded a double-double with 24 points and 11 rebounds. Adriana Garcia flushed 16 points, while Trinity Vasquez and Dyani Brewer each bucketed 15 points. Riverside will continue action on Tuesday, February 12 against the Irvine Valley College Lasers on the road at 7 p.m.

The Tigers went 1-1 on the week highlighted by a 76-72 win over the Cypress College Chargers. It was a back and forth affair throughout the entire game, but the Tigers clawed their way to a win due to strong offense down the stretch. Tyree Winborn led the Tigers in scoring with 19 points, backed by 15 points from Franky McQuay. McQuay also added seven rebounds and one assist to go along with a 9-for-10 mark from the charity stripe. CJ Clark followed with 11 points and one assist. Riverside will continue action on Tuesday, February 12 against the Irvine Valley College Lasers on the road at 5 p.m.

The Tigers kicked off its 2019 campaign on Friday morning by hosting the Riverside Sprint Meet. It was utter dominance displayed by the Tigers in a meet with slim competition as the men and women took home first place with ease. The men scored an absurd 1,239 points, while the women clocked in a strong 758 points.
The men were led by freshman Erick Fathoni who placed first in all three of his events. He began by clocking a 100 Fly time of 52.93, backed by a 1:00.30 time in the 100 Breaststroke and a 1:58.23 mark in the 200 IM. Freshman Zack Thelwell matched him with three first-place finishes beginning with a 50 Free time of 22.23. He continued on to earn a 1:53.10 mark in the 200 Free and a 48.98 clip in the 100 Free.
Freshman Andrew Kucenas earned a pair of top finishes starting with a 58.55 mark in the 100 Back. He capped his day with a 50 Back time of 28.95. Freshman Sennes Chow earned a first place finish by touching the wall at a time of 29.36 in the 50 Breaststroke.
The women were led by freshman Liz Bouffort as she earned a trio of first-place finishes. She began by reigning supreme in the 50 Free at a time of 25.93. She continued on to earn a 2:06.10 mark in the 200 Free, backed by a 57.08 in the 100 Free. Freshman Mackenzie Herndon earned a pair of first-place finishes with a time of 34.91 in the 50 Breaststroke and a 1:15.24 mark in the 100 Breaststroke.
Freshman Emilia Bennet experienced a strong debut highlighted by a second-place finish in the 100 Fly at a time of 1:04.6. Sophomore Caelan Loroff reeled in a second-place finish in the 200 Free at a clip reading 2:07.36.
Riverside will continue action on Friday, February 22 at the Golden West Invitational at 9 a.m.
Riverside hosted a five-way meet featurng Mt. San Antonio, San Diego Mesa, Cerritos and Glendale on home turf to begin their 2019 campaign. The Tigers picked up just where they left off last season by performing at an extraordinary level. The men reigned supreme by scoring 129.33 points, while the women followed suit with a victory after earning 108 total points.
Sophomore sprinter and reigning state champion Antonio Mitchell picked up just where he left off in the spirting events. HE paced his team with a pair of first-place finishes. He clocked in a 6.60 in the 60 M backed by a 34.30 in the 300 M. Sophomore Dillon Lay placed first in the 400 M Hurdles by snapping the tape at a time of 56.38, while freshman Mohamed Mohammed earned the gold in the 600 M with a mark of 1:23.33.
The distance squad got off to a strong start highlighted by a victory in the 4 x 800 M Relay. Freshman Matthew Lieberman, sophomore Angel Campos, sophomore Enrique Villa, and Mohammed earned a time of 8:19.62 which was approximately four seconds stronger than the second-place finisher. Villa continued on in a solo venture to haul in the silver medal in the one mile run with a time of 4:27.67.
The throws unit chipped in a major portion of the Tiger's points. Sophomore Alec Jones placed first in the Discus and Hammer. He recorded a personal best 171' 7" in the Hammer and a 147' 4" in the Discus. Sophomore Marcos Gonzalez earned the gold medal in the Javelin by chucking a meet-best 182' 11".
Freshman Patrick Maria placed first in the High Jump by leaping over a mark of 6'. Freshman Christian Gbla earned a win in the Triple Jump with a mark reading 42' 6.75"
The women put together an all-around performance that saw contributors from many areas of their team. The distance runners produced strong results with freshman Maribel Madera and sophomore Sujey Esteva taking the reins. Esteva finished first in the one mile run with a time of 5:50.50 with Madera right on her heels, literally, at 5:50.51. It was much of the same story for the pair in the two mile run, but reversed. Madera edged out Esteva with a mark of 12:16.01, while Esteva earned a 12:16.03 clip.
The speedsters performed at a high level with freshman Annayah Pelt earning first place in the 300 M with a mark of 41.16. Freshman Madeline Corner followed in the 400 M Hurdles with a first-place finish at 1:07.06. Pelt contributed to a 4 x 100 M Relay team that snapped the tape. She was joined by freshman Alana Wilson, sophomore Alondra Gonzalez and freshman Mariah Allain to earn a time of 48.67.
The field events were a strong component to the victory highlighted by two first place finishes from freshman Tayler Salley. She reigned supreme in the Discus with a toss of 119' 10" and the Hammer with a chuck of 141' 11". Sophomore Angelique Hudson followed suit with a victory in the Shot Put at a mark of 42' 10.75". Freshman Kaaliyah Latsonleaped her way to a victory in the High Jump with a mark reading 4' 9".
Riverside will continue action at home on Friday, February 22 as they host the first Orange Empire Conference (OEC) Invitational of the year. The meet is set to start at 12 p.m.
The Tigers went 2-1 on the week by defeating LA Harbor, 11-7, and splitting a two-game series with East Los Angeles with a 7-6 victory on Saturday. In the victory over East Los Angeles, the Tigers overcame a one-run deficit and utilized a three-run seventh inning leading to the win. Steven Ramirez went 4-for-5 with a triple, three RBI and on run scored. Drew D'Ambra earned the win after chucking two innings and fanning a pair of hitters. Lawrence Castaneda entered in the bottom of the ninth to record the save. Riverside continues action on Tuesday, February 12 in a non-conference showdown against Grossmont at 2 p.m.

Riverside dropped their lone contest of the week to Southwestern by the final score of 6-1 on Wednesday. Karter Williams went 2-for-3 with a run scored, while Maryjane Davila, Jocelyn Ontiveros and Zinaida Preciado each barreled one hit. Lorena Fitch picked up the loss after allowing six runs on eight hits. Marissa-Lena Nares chucked 1.2 innings and allowed just one hit and fanned one batter. Riverside will continue action on Tuesday, February 12 at home against Antelope Valley at 3 p.m.

Riverside is off to an incredibly strong start and did not slow down this week. They defeated Rio Hondo, 9-0, and dominated the Jaguar Invitational. Freshman duo and top doubles team Torrey Mateljan and Maxelle Bernie have been holding down the top slot and are currently undefeated. They defeated their opponents with ease by the final score of 8-2. Individually, Mateljan acted as the top singles player and cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 win. Bernie acted as the number three and earned a flawless 6-0, 6-0 win. Heather Graf was the number two individual player and won 6-2, 6-2. Riverside will continue action on Tuesday, February 12 against Mt. San Jacinto at home at 2 p.m.

The Tigers defeated the Grossmont College Griffins, 6-3, on Wednesday for their third-consecutive win. Top singles player Miles Clark earned a three-set, comeback victory with scores reading 2-6, 7-5, 11-9. Number two Gleb Mityurin earned a two set victory at 6-2, 6-1, while Ayrton Aviles recorded the other two-set victory at the sixth position. Clark and Mityurin teamed up as the top doubles team and reign supreme b the final score of 8-6. Riverside will continue action on Tuesday, February 12 as they will host Ventura at 2 p.m.
