Riverside Athletics Week in Review – 3/12/18: Riley Peckels Tosses No-No for No. 9 Softball, Swimming & Diving Places Tops in Chaffey Invite, Track & Field Boast State-Pacing Marks
The Tigers competed in a pair of meets this past week which included the OEC Multi Championships and the Ben Brown Invitational.
Men
Freshman Antonio Mitchell had another impressive showing by placing first in the 200M with a mark of 21.45. Freshman Jamal Parker was not far behind in the same event by placing fourth with a mark of 21.88. Freshman Keylan Dennis earned a top finish in the 400M with a mark of 47.47 with freshman Keanon Dennis finishing just behind him in second with a time of 47.67. Freshman Christopher Shiley placed third in the same event by boasting a mark of 48.88. Sophomore Alec Hall earned a second-place finish in the 800M with a time of 1:53.06, while freshman Enrique Villa followed with a time of 1:55.25 to take fourth place. The Tigers performed well in the distance events with freshman Michael Robinson earning fourth place in the 5000M with a mark of 14:59.25. Freshman Austin Dai followed with a sixth-place finish after earning a clip of 15:11.50. Freshman Marcos Gonzalez highlighted the throws for the men as he tossed a 170' in the Javelin.

Women
Freshman Maryjane Smith took her talents to the 400M and placed third with a final time of 58.22. The Riverside Relays came in strong with a 4x400M relay placing second with a time of 4:07.80 and the 4x100M coming in third with a clip of 50:48. Freshman Javay McDermott earned a tied for first finish in the High Jump with a mark of 4' 11", while freshman Katelyn Baker earned a 35' 4.75" in the Triple Jump. Freshman Cam'ay Stocker helmed the throws with a Discuss toss of 124' 5".

The Riverside City College swimming & diving program hosted the Chaffey College Invitational at the Riverside Aquatic Center this past weekend. On a weekend dominated by the rain, the Tigers weathered the storm leading to a first-place showing for the men and a second-place showing for the women. The two sides combined for a team points total of 1,695.5 to earn a team victory as well.
Men
The men earned a total of 1,056 points to reel in the victory which was just over 200 points better than second-place finisher San Diego Mesa College. The men began the day with a second-place finish in the 200 IM Relay with a team comprised of freshman Javier Bernal, sophomore Arnaud Magnan, sophomore Jesse Mondragon, and freshman Alexander Piron. They earned a total time of 1:30.50. Their relays continued to hold strong as they reigned supreme in the 800 Free Relay with a mark of 7:23.25 with a team made up of sophomore Farouk Zaoui, Bernal, Mondragon, and Piron. Brandon Doyle, Piron, Magnan, and Mondragon teamed up to haul in a top finish in the 400 Free Relay with a time of 3:17.32, while the same foursome earned a3:43.01 finish in the 400 Medley Relay to earn the gold medal. Individually, the Tigers saw three different swimmers earn top finishes. Bernal placed top the podium in the 200 IM (1:58.68), Mondragon earned a top finish in the 200 Free (1:48.42), and Magnan placed first in the 100 Back (56.12). Zaoui had a consistent showing as he earned second-place finishes in the 500 Free (4:56.26), the 400 IM (4:34.82), while placing third in the 200 Fly (2:05.51). Piron earned a trio of second-place finishes coming in the 50 Free (22.53), the 100 Fly (54.00), and the 100 Free (48.42). Bernal notched a second-place showing in the 200 Fly (1:59.12) as well.
Women
The women performed very well after placing second with a points tally of 639.5. They utilized a strong relays squad that placed in the top three in four events. The Tigers saw two second-place finishes in relays with the first coming in the 200 Medley Relay. A team made up of freshman Katelin Simonson, freshman Supavee Nilaad, freshman Monet Marquez, and freshman Hannah McCarley earned a mark of 2:02.58. Freshman Elizabeth Martinez, Simonson, Nilaad, and McCarley followed later with a second-place finish in the 400 Medley Relay with a mark of 4:37.92. Freshman Ysatis Lujan, Nilaad, Marquez, and McCarley teamed up in the 400 Free Relay to place third with a time of 3:59.74, while the same foursome placed third in the 200 Free Relay with a clip of 1:46.19. Freshman Yamatzia Sanchez placed third in the 400 IM with a mark of 5:32.25, while Nilaad earned a time of 2:47.5 in the 200 Breaststroke to place third. Freshman Andrionna Gonzalez earned a fifth place finish in the 200 IM with a time of 2:35.54.
The Tigers took a three-game series from the No. 2 Chargers in conference action this past week highlighted by a 4-1 victory on Friday. Graham Kuck notched a pair of saves over the weekend, while starting pitching performances from David Barela and Alexander Salazar paced them throughout the entire weekend. Both starters tossed eight innings, while Salazar allowed zero earned runs. In the Friday win, Shane Martinez went 2-for-4 while Erick Rayford recorded the lone RBI via sacrifice fly.
Riley Peckels had the game of her career in a conference victory over Golden West as she tossed her first career no hitter and 16th in program history and first since 2013. She faced just 15 batters and utilized a flawless defense. She nearly tossed a perfect game despite allowing one walk and hitting one batter. Aside from that, she was truly untouchable. Offensively, the Tigers barreled 11 hits and plated 15 runs. Aeriel Carlson went 3-for-3 with a triple, two RBI, and three runs scored.
Riverside hosted a trio of competitors on Saturday and went 2-1 by defeating Palomar and Pasadena via sweep to go 2-1 on the day. In both wins, the Tigers won eight matches via straight-set sweep. Furthermore, Riverside halted their opponents to under 10 points in seven set victories. Sophomore tandem Brittney Diffine (Riverside, CA) and Marcella Rodriguez (Belize City, Belize) acted as the top pair in all three matches. In both team victories, the duo won in straight sets with a 21-9, 21-6 victory over Pasadena and a 21-13, 21-17 victory over Palomar. Freshman Lauren Dunmore (Northridge, CA) and sophomore Delaney Beck (Riverside, CA) held their own by not dropping a single set. They defeated Palomar by the final score of 21-9, 21-8 for their most impressive victory of the day. Freshman Natalie Escher (Redlands, CA) and freshman Julia Balancier (Moreno Valley, CA) hauled in a pair of three-set victories as the number two squad, while freshman Madison Bogh(Highland, CA) and freshman Roni Lopez (Rialot, CA) earned a pair of straight-set sweep at the three position.
The Tigers continued to roll as they hauled in two conference victories in wins over Cypress and Irvine Valley. In their biggest match against Cypress, it came down to a number four singles match after the No. 2 Riverside City College men's tennis team and the No. 5 Cypress College Chargers found themselves locked in a tight match. Sophomore Sami Akouz (Perpignan, France) came in clutch and clinched the match with a three set victory (7-5, 3-6, 6-2) at the number four singles leading to a 5-4. With the victory, the Tigers move into sole possession of first place in the Orange Empire Conference (OEC) by boasting an undefeated record both overall and in conference. Freshman Kayne Trustfull (Amsterdam, Netherlands) held down the top singles slot and reigned supreme in two sets by the final scores of 6-3, 6-4. Freshman Thomas Pidoux (Perpignon, France) followed suit at the number two singles with a two set victory with scores reading 6-4, 6-2. Akouz was the deciding match in his three-set thriller, while freshman Miles Clark (Rancho Cucamonga, CA) dominated at the number five with a 6-1, 6-2 win.
Riverside went 1-1 on the week highlighted by a victory over Cypress by the final score of 8-1. Freshman Heather Graf (Yucaipa, CA) earned a pair of victories on the day with one coming at the number two singles by the final count of 6-3, 6-0. She teamed up with freshman Emilia Lopez (Norco, CA) earlier in the day and earned a victory at the number one doubles with the final score of 8-5. Sophomore Autumn Keay (Running Springs, CA) earned a two-set win as they number three by the final scores of 6-1, 6-3. Freshman Jolene Beaulieu (Riverside, CA) followed with a victory at the number four singles with a count of 6-3, 6-0.
The Tigers placed fourth in the SoCal Preview this past Monday with an overall team stroke count of 379. Michael Herrera paced the squad by carding a 72, while Ryan DeHart and Brain Nielsen each earn a 75. The Tigers return to action today as they compete against Cypress College at Candlewood Country Club.
